The development of Indian violin and vocal music and composition in the 20th century owes a lot to the massive contributions of Lalgudi G Jayaraman and his family. This maestro artist set a trend for composition and performance, and much like Pandit Ravi Shankar in Hindustani Music, added a huge body of work to Carnatic Music and became synonymous with the genre. His legacy is carried forward today by his son and daughter, the brilliant duo Lalgudi GJR Krishnan and Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi, who are world renowned leaders in their field, and draw from the rich ‘Lalgudi bani’ repertoire. Carnatic instrumental music is based on a rich repertoire of compositions that are devotional, tell stories, and feature both improvisation and fixed passages. The music has complex rhythm patterns and brilliant ensemble interaction. The duo are joined by two masters of percussion, mridangist Patri Satish Kumar, and tabla player Kousic Sen.
