Rossini had been retired from writing opera for thirty years when this mass was written. It was the last of what he called his ‘sins of old age’, comprising 13 volumes of music. The mass was not written for a church performance but for a lavish Parisian salon, hence the scoring of just two pianos and harmonium. The manuscript is annotated by the composer: ‘Good God; there we have it – complete – this poor little Mass. Is it really sacred music, or is it really abominable music? I was born for Opera Buffa as well thou knowest. A little skill, a little heart, and that is all. Be blessed then and grant me Paradise.’
