The Department of Social Science is an exciting new development at Hope. Both Criminology and Sociology have been taught here for some years, but they have now been brought together into a single Department. Both disciplines have a keen interest in issues to do with social problems and justice and thus reflect Hope’s mission.
We are a growing Department with a diverse and enthusiastic team who are active researchers in a number of areas. Students are at the heart of our work and all of our staff are experienced lecturers.
Crime and justice are amongst the most contentious and challenging issues facing us today. Why do people commit crime? Are the police meant to prevent crime or to provide reassurance to the public? How do the courts deal with offenders? Are court sentences effective in responding to offending? What can research tell us about these issues? These, and similar questions, are the issues we explore in Criminology.
Sociology covers a wider range of topics than Criminology. Sociology seeks to understand how society is organised and how the structures we develop then have an impact upon our everyday lives. Sociological thinking can illuminate all kinds of issues, from education to the environment, from politics to paedophilia, from race to religion. And it can help to explain the contemporary issues we face in the 21st century such as terrorism, surveillance and globalisation.
Our aim is to make your time with us enjoyable but also challenging and thought-provoking. Our programmes will provide you with the necessary skills, competences and knowledge to become fully-rounded members of society. Teaching is delivered by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials as well as independent study.
