How to stay positive on World Health Day

As people across the globe mark World Health Day, the Student Development and Well-being department would like to share some student tips on positive mental health.

The Five Ways to Wellbeing are evidence-based ways to help you improve your mental well-being. Try to integrate them into your daily life, think of them as your ‘five-a-day’ for mental well-being.

  • Connect – Connect with the people around you: your family, friends and flatmates.
  • Be active – Make the most of the gym membership offer at Hope, take a walk to Calderstones Park, go cycling on one of the local City Bikes or play a game of football with your flatmates.
  • Keep learning – Learning new skills can give you a sense of achievement and a new confidence. As well as learning academically, why not sign up for that cooking course or start learning to play a musical instrument.
  • Give to others – even the smallest act can count, whether it's a smile, a thank you or a kind word. Larger acts, such as volunteering through SALA, can improve your mental well-being and help you build new social networks.
  • Be mindful – be more aware of the present moment, including your thoughts and feelings, your body and the world around you. Some people call this awareness ‘mindfulness’. It can positively change the way you feel about life and how you approach challenges.
